accident、incident和event用法辨析

1.accident有两个常见含义:

1）,意外事故(something unpleasant, undesirable，or damaging),如 ：

traffic accident(交通事故),car accident(车祸)。

I had an accident when I was driving to work - my car hit a tree.

我开车上班时出了事故--我的汽车撞在树上了。

There has been a road accident.

发生了一起交通事故。

2）. 偶然发生的事(可以是好事,也可以是坏事)。

The discovery was a happy accident.

这一发现是一个令人高兴的意外。

Your meeting us was a mere accident.

你和我们见面只是个意外。

It was just an accident that I found the missing letter.(好事)

我找到了那封丢失了的信,完全是偶然的。

I'm sorry I broke your watch-it was an accident.(坏事)。

2.incident 则是指“不好的或异乎寻常的事件”,可能是大事件,也可能是小事件。

发生的事情(尤指不寻常的或讨厌的)；(两国间的)摩擦，冲突；严重事件，暴力事件(如犯罪、事故、袭击等)；(常指)军事冲突

The incident has received wide coverage in the press.

这个事件已被新闻界广泛报道。

The incident had shaken her faith in him.

这件事动摇了她对他的信心。

The incident was used as a pretext for intervention in the area.

这次事件成了干涉那个地区的借口。

mishap n. 小事故

occurrence n. 事件

指生活中发生的一般的或偶然的事件。

Traffic jams are a common occurrence in that area.

Extreme weather is a rare occurrence in that country.
